English A poetry and two literature pieces were taken up to begin with. The poem – ‘Foreign Lands’ was introduced through the Reader’s theatre, small group loud recitation. Students discussed the aspects of poetic devices, comprehension, prediction and vocabulary in small teams. They presented their understanding in a larger group. The background of the poet was also discussed. Students then consolidated their learning in the written form in their notebooks. Some extended follow up exercises were also taken up such as reading a similar poem in the book, finding the poetic devices and illustrating their own fairyland. This was followed by a fictional excerpt - Treasure Seekers – I & II to further consolidate it in written form. The topic of Adjectives was also introduced in grammar. Math On joining back school, students revised the lessons already done and prepared for the Math unit test. A recap of all the concepts was done again to strengthen their understanding of Number Systems. As a prior knowledge assessment, students were grouped and were given set of key words that they had to sort according to the number operations. Students started practicing number operations sums and word problems using RUCSC method (‘Read', 'Understand', 'Choose', 'Solve', 'Answer' and 'Check’). Some students took up the challenge and attempted the challenge sums. Math-o-mania competition was also held and students were tested on their mathematical abilities. Science The month started with students begin their journey to understand more about animals by learning the meaning of various terms - reproduction, vertebrates, invertebrates, terrestrial, amphibians, aerial, aquatic, arboreal, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, scavengers, parasites, host, migration etc. They studied about the life cycle of butterfly and frog and observed the specimen of a tadpole and a caterpillar in Science Lab. They also observed the complete life cycle of silk moth. After the nature walk, they collected the data i.e. name of various living beings and sorted them into vertebrates and invertebrates through Think-Pair-Share activity. Their learning was boosted through a reflection form in the form of red, yellow and green zones, followed by peer teaching, where students clarified each other’s doubts. Social Science The session post the summer vacation started with the revision of States and their Capitals. While introducing the topic Northern Plains, students were divided into different groups to do their research work i.e. States of Northern Plains their capital, food, festival, language, traditional dress & dance. This group research work helped the students to work together in teams, listen to their peers, communicate clearly and enhance their social skills. To ensure that students understood about landscape of the Northern Plains and Northern Mountains, they attempted to mark the same on the political map of India. As a pre-cursor to chapter- The Great Indian Desert, a class activity was done where students were given sticky notes and their pre-knowledge about the desert was tested. They were asked to write what they knew about the location, climate or vegetation of the desert and post it on the chart. A mind map was then created to introduce the chapter- The Great Indian Desert. Art and Pottery Students made posters for ‘Save The Tiger’ campaign. They were taught steps drawing of animal figures and other natural elements like jungle and landscape. They used oil pastels to make their art work attractive. Indian Music Students practiced basic vocal warm up exercises to improve their singing. They started the class with सरगम in rhythm and understood about scale and important factors of rhythm and practice in classical music. They are practicing a song “ जाग रहे हम वीर जवान “ Western Music Students have practiced a beautiful song sung by (Gary Barlow) and learnt to sing with enthusiasm. They enjoyed learning how to play the guitar – both individually and as a group. During the lessons, students learnt the guitar pattern of the same song. Physical Education
ICT Students learnt about formatting in Microsoft Word 2010 which includes applying superscript and subscript in the document, applying shadow effects to the text. They also learned the page orientation settings, applying header and footer, applying column and column break to the document. This enabled them to prepare a formatted document for use or to print. Life Skills Students will be able to understand that their real friends don’t care what they look like. They like them because of who they are and not by looks. It’s not important to please everyone around us. Understanding and valuing their own self and being proud of themselves was the core learning in this month Life skill session. Students learn strategies to cope how to handle a situation when they are teased and learn to deal it wisely so that it doesn’t affect them negatively. As the theme of the month was animals this concept was thought through a problem faced by a tortoise in a zoo. This was followed by students writing their thoughts in a reflection sheet. Drama Students learnt the characteristics, different sounds of animals and their body movements. They took this understanding further when they portrayed the character of an animal in a small act related to “Save the Tiger”. Students are slowly gaining confidence while performing on stage. Robotics AIR FOR FLYING: In this session student had explored about different type of forces responsible for things to keep them airborne. They also studied about different form of energy and how energy transformation takes place during the time of flight. To understand things more deeply they made a rubber powered Rotocopter and tested it by increasing the thrust level through the number of winding of a rubber band and recorded the observation whether time of flight for all the thrust level is same or different. Here are few glimpse of kids while they are engaged in the activity: Glimpses of school activities
